Money and cards in Laos
Laos is general is still a cheap place to travel, though you can easily spend a great deal on accommodations and food in Luang Prabang. When traveling in Laos, you can use U.S dollars.
However, if you want your payment more easily, you can exchange your cash and travel’s checks at the main bank of Lao- the Bank Pour Le Commerce Extérieur Lao or The Joint Development Bank. Both banks now have ATMs in Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Pakse, Savannahkhet, and ThaKhek. Although they are springing up at a rapid rate, and many accept both Visa and Master Card, they only transact with Lao kip.
Credit cards are accepted by larger hotels, more expensive restaurants, and boutiques. In general, though, their use is restricted and Laos is very much a cash economy.
